Barzani: New Government is the Last Chance for United Iraq

Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani has said that the formation of the new Iraqi government is the last chance for a united Iraq.

He believes that the object should not only be forming the new government, but to also implement new programs and refrain from making the same mistakes as the previous government.

On Tuesday, Barzani met Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and his delegates in Erbil. In the meeting, Barzani mentioned his opinion about the formation of the new government of Iraq, claiming that it would be the last chance to address the deep-rooted issues in the country.

He noted that if the newly elected officials repeat the mishaps of the past, then the crisis will worsen and become far more difficult to resolve.

Bildt stated that Sweden and the whole of the EU encourages all political parties in Iraq to form a consensus government, where all the parties will participate in the cabinet equally in order to more fairly combat crisis and threat of terror in the country.

Swedish Foreign Minister Bildt agreed that the Kurds have a valuable voice, and should have high participation in the Iraqi government.

According to the Kurdistan Regional President (KRP) website, Bildt came with an EU Humanitarian Help committee to support the Kurdistan Region and emphasized Sweden’s continued support of the huge humanitarian undertaking that the KRG has accepted.

Bildt thanked the KRG and the people of Kurdistan Region for helping and protecting the life of hundreds of thousands refugees in the region from terrorist threat. Bildt and his delegates mentioned that EU will continuously support the Kurdistan Region until they end the crisis of refugees and threat of terrorists.

“We view our help to the refugees as a national and humanitarian duty, and we are proud of being able to protect the life of this large number of refugees in the Kurdistan Region,’’ said Barzani.

Barzani asked Bildt and his delegates to encourage the international community to increase their help to the refugees, as caring sufficiently for almost 2 million IDP’s and refugees has become almost more than the KRG can manage.

At another point in the meeting, the groups discussed the horrors of the verdict crimes being carried out by the terrorists against the Yazidis and Christians. Both agreed that terror is an international phenomenon that has impact on the entire region as well as the world, and it must be destroyed.
