Iran Prosecutor Reportedly Killed In Attack
Reports say a public prosecutor in Iran’s restive southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan has been killed in a “terrorist attack.”
Ebrahim Hamidi, the head of the provincial judiciary, is quoted by Iranian news agencies as saying that Mousa Nouri, the prosecutor in the city of Zabul, was shot dead by unknown assailants who opened fire on his car.
His driver was also killed.
Zabul is close to the border with Afghanistan.
Sistan-Baluchistan is home to a large community of minority Sunni Muslims, unlike the rest of Shi’ite-dominated Iran, and the province has long played host to drug traffickers and Sunni militants.
The Sunni Jaish-ul Adl rebel group claimed responsibility for an ambush last month that killed 14 border guards near the Pakistani border.
Iran in retaliation said it had executed 16 “rebels” — eight Sunni insurgents and eight drug traffickers.
