Press release: 2014-12-09
demonstration in support of Kurdish prisoners hunger strike, Sunday 14 December, 13.00 hours, Mynttorget, Stockholm
Islamic Republic of Iran has from the earliest days always been the biggest threat to the Iranian people and its freedom fighters. Imprisonment, torture and hanging have been frequently used to suppress the voices of freedom.
After taking power, Hassan Rouhani’s regime manipulated the domestic and international public opinion by proclaimed human rights and reform. The declarations made by the government were a planned method to mislead public opinion. Rouhani’s government has shown a rather negative development in terms of human rights and the Iranian Peoples’ Rights. Statistics show strong reactionary policy with increased prison sentences, torture and hangings.
Over the past few days, Islamic Republic’s repression against politicians and civil activists has intensified significantly. Psychological and physical torture has reached extreme limits. Unacceptable mass arrests of activists provide repeated evidence of this. Oppressive assimilation policies are imposed upon all ethnic groups in Iran. Political prisoners representing the free-mind and will of the people are exposed to increased attacks and oppression.
Summary trials, mass hanging, imprisonment and torture of activists during Rouhani’s power are evidence of the state’s insistent policy of a persistent denial of peoples’ identity and will.
In response to this policy, the Kurdish political prisoners in the city of Urmia have started a hunger strike and their health is deteriorating day by day. This action is to defend civil rights, identities and will. It is our duty and responsibility to support these political prisoners in their struggle for human rights.
We now urge all freedom activists, political parties, civil society organizations and human rights activists and NGO:s to advance our political prisoners´ message to the international community.
